Faradaic efficiency calculator.
Quantify the fraction of electrical charge that produces a specified electrochemical product.
Experimental data
Use absolute gas pressure. If the gas was collected over water, correct the pressure for water-vapour pressure before entering it.
How the calculation works
1. Total charge
Q = I × t, where current is in amperes and time is in seconds.
2. Product amount
For gases, n = pV / RT, corrected by the entered product fraction. Alternatively, enter a measured amount in mmol.
3. Faradaic efficiency
FE = zFn / Q × 100, using the electron stoichiometry for the selected product.
Assumptions: constant current; ideal-gas behaviour; supplied pressure is absolute; the product fraction represents the mole fraction of the target gas; and z is the balanced electron count per molecule of product. This calculator does not correct for leaks, dissolved gas, crossover, dead volume, or collection losses. Report these corrections separately when applicable.
